2016 Year in Review

Tax Services Australia has had many opportunities to help our clients with some excellent results during 2016.

We have helped some clients who were under significant pressure to bring catch-up the lodgement of their late tax returns for a ‘few decades’ and clients needing help with other circumstances.  In particular we would like to send out a big Thank You to June, who trusted us with her and her husband’s tax matters and provided a very generous review on our Facebook page.  There was a lot to do June, but we got there!

We also helped a senior gentleman, with quite a large and complex and difficult job covering many years, who also entrusted our office to help him and the ATO responded ‘in kind’ with interest charges of more than half a million dollars.  Tax Services Australia made very strong representations on his behalf and we were successful in having the full amount withdrawn, leaving not one cent of interest for him to pay.  Our thanks also, to the senior ATO officers who ‘listened’ to our arguments and agreed to helping our Client.

We have also supported many Australians moving in and out of Australia with amazing job opportunities overseas and the changes in tax laws in recent years, particularly in 2009 and 2012, have made this a much more scary minefield for the unwary and we urge people not to be complacent in this area.

We thank our Clients who have been with us for many years, for staying with us and knowing that we do not take you for granted.  Tax Services Australia seeks to bring our enthusiastic attention to detail to your tax matters every year, just like the first year you allowed us to help you.  Broadly – with the very unusual exception (the last 4+ years ago) – the ATO do not raise questions or review or audit any of the tax returns we lodged for our Clients.  The care we take to understand your affairs, check to prior years and other records we access to cross-check, and by keeping our ‘thinking cap’ on, means the returns we prepare and lodge for you are as ‘complete and correct’ as possible.  This means the ATO do not need to stop and include income we have missed, etc.  Especially after they have been with us for many years, some clients have become complacent and think Australian tax is simple because they do not experience problems year after year. 

But the clients who have been subject to a review or audit or have been chased down by the ATO for outstanding tax returns who approach Tax Services Australia for help, are the ones who realise the care and complete attention to detail we bring to their affairs often not just gets their ‘key’ problem sorted, but we knock over several problems in one hit or give them opportunities that they didn’t imagine. 

More than any other year, in 2016 our office has been very actively involved with our professional associations, members of Parliament including the Tax and revenue Committee of the House of Representatives, and other critical important parties within the Australian tax system including the offices of the Inspector-General of Taxation, the Tax Practitioner Board and the Tax Board.

These parties are strongly interested in the performance and improvement of the tax system, in its shape and its performance, particularly issues around the ATO’s ‘Reinvention’ and drive to Digital by Default which, unfortunately, culminated at year end in the catastrophic collapse of crucial IT systems for well over a week in December 2016.
